PETALING JAYA: The Alor Setar election court has affirmed Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) victory in the Suka Menanti seat in the recent state polls.
Judge Quay Chew Soon dismissed the election petition filed by Zamri Yusuf, the Pakatan Harapan candidate who lost, to challenge PN’s win in the state seat.
Quay held that Zamri’s petition was defective and ordered him to pay RM15,000 in costs.
In the Aug 12 polls, PN’s Dzowahir Ab Ghani obtained 18,396 votes to win the seat in a straight fight against Zamri who polled 10,151 votes.
In his petition, Zamri claimed that Dzowahir’s victory was invalid as the Election Commission (EC) had failed to comply with election laws when holding the polls.
He said the alleged failure had “affected” the outcome of the polls.
He also claimed the EC had denied postal, polling and counting agents entry into polling stations and that “ineligible” voters were allowed to vote.
However, the EC objected to Zamri’s petition, saying he had failed to provide sufficient particulars to back his claims.
Zamri was represented by lawyer Sofee Razak while the EC was represented by senior federal counsel Ahmad Hanir Hambaly, Nur Idayu Amir and Sallehuddin Ali.
