PETALING JAYA: Muda is set to establish official ties with Thailand’s Move Forward Party (MFP), which won the most seats in our northern neighbour’s national elections in May.
Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said she will meet representatives from MFP soon to formalise the cooperation between the two parties and will also meet other like-minded political parties in Southeast Asia.
The MFP was led by Pita Limjaroenrat, who had failed in his bid to become Thailand’s new prime minister after the elections.
He was subsequently suspended from Parliament by the Thai Constitutional Court which stated that he was not qualified to contest in the elections because of his ownership of shares in a media firm.
“Another political partner in the Southeast Asia region is the Indonesian Solidarity Party,” Amira told a press conference, referring to the party led by Indonesian president Joko Widodo’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, 28.
“We hope to form strong cooperation (with these parties) to show Muda’s commitment towards lifting the country’s name in Southeast Asia, and not just the party.”
She added that Muda will hold its first party elections in the second quarter of next year, with more details to be announced in the future.
The Puteri Wangsa assemblyman said that the party will also embark on a “party rejuvenation agenda” to ascertain the exact number of members it has currently.
According to Amira, about 80,000 people have joined the party since its formation, and that the registration process was conducted openly.
“As a result, Muda has grown on a large scale in a short span of time. While this open process was not complicated in order to ease registrations, the party must now check on the latest status of its membership.
“As such, we will conduct checks on each and every membership registration immediately,” she said. “Muda believes that this is an important step towards strengthening the party’s position internally.”
Amira added that she will be going to every state over the next 100 days to hold official meetings with the state Muda leaders and members.
