JOHOR BAHRU: Contemporary legal issues affecting several aspects of Malaysian law will take centre stage at the sixth annual Iskandar Malaysia Law Conference which will see an array of prominent speakers, including serving judges.
Among the papers to be delivered at the one-day event tomorrow are those dealing with laws on sexual harassment, human rights, constitutional rights, the environment and personal data protection.
A spokesperson for MY Iskandar Sdn Bhd (MISB), the organiser of the conference, said Malaysians were facing major issues that involved laws related to these subjects.
She said it was also to help stakeholders understand how an organisation could manage risks and opportunities related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors as these were vital in international trade and relations.
MISB has lined up experienced judges and lawyers to share their knowledge.
Federal Court judge Mary Lim Thiam Suan will speak on the impact of laws and judgements on sexual harassment while former associate professor at the law faculty in Universiti Malaya, Azmi Sharom, who is now the Election Commission deputy chairman, will talk about development and environmental law.
Johor Bahru High Court judge Nurulhuda Nur’Aini Mohamad Nor will speak on the disclosure of personal data while Asian International Arbitration Centre director Sundra Rajoo will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act.
Other speakers are senior lawyer Mohamad Sofian Shamsudin (who will discuss employment law), UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei director Edey Suresh (legal development on ESG) and human rights lawyer Fahri Azad (constitutional rights).
MISB is jointly organising the conference with Law Chambers of Vin Sa & Ian.
As this programme is also part of Iskandar Malaysia’s corporate social responsibility youth community capacity building agenda, it is offering free participation to university students.
About 200 people from related sectors will be attending the conference. FMT is the media partner for the event.
