PETALING JAYA: PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has taken a massive lead in the race for the Kemaman parliamentary seat.
As of 7.55pm, unofficial results show that the Terengganu menteri besar has obtained 41,450 votes while Barisan Nasional’s Raja Affandi Raja Noor has only managed 17,992 votes so far.
This means Samsuri is leading by 23,458 votes.
Terengganu PAS said 160 of 249 ballot boxes have already been counted.
Samsuri is in a straight fight with Raja Affandi, a retired general and former defence forces chief.
The by-election was called following an election court decision on Sept 26 annulling the victory of PAS candidate Che Alias Hamid in the 15th general election last year.
The election court held that the distribution of government aid to voters during the campaign period constituted election bribery.
Che Alias had won the seat with a 27,179-vote majority over his closest rival, Terengganu Umno chief and former menteri besar Ahmad Said. The other two candidates were Hasuni Sudin of Pakatan Harapan and Rosli Ab Ghani of Pejuang.
