KLANG: Pakatan Harapan supporters should take pride in the “madanon” label given to the unity government by the opposition, says Amanah Wanita chief Aiman Athirah Sabu.
She told Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters, especially the party’s women wing, there are positive connotations to the term “madani”, as highlighted in a chapter by the late Faisal Othman from the 1997 book “Masyarakat Madani: Satu Tinjauan Awal”.
According to Aiman, the article stated that the main pillar of “madani” involves the integration of industrialisation, innovation and modern technology, coupled with ethics, morality and integrity.
“So, being called ‘madanon’ is not a problem as it signifies an individual with good morals and integrity. Let’s fight those who make such statements,” she said in her speech at the National Amanah Wanita convention today.
“Let us refrain from engaging in the denigration of this idea, which is inherently pure and grounded in Islamic principles.”
The term “madanon” is commonly used by Perikatan Nasional (PN) supporters to describe those who support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, which adopts the slogan “Malaysia Madani.” It is a combination of the term “madani” with “Bang Non”, the pet name his family used to refer to him.
Aiman also hoped for increased opportunities for women in both the party and the government, saying that women’s quotas should be viewed not merely as gender-based allocations but as an embodiment of democracy itself.
“The antiquated mindset that women’s participation is tokenism needs to be discarded today,” she said.
“Women are not mere accessories in the political machinery for securing votes. We have demonstrated sincerity and dedication, with comprehensive effort and ideas to propel Malaysia forward in a civilised manner.”
