RM71 billion in PTPTN loans so far, RM32 billion not repaid

PETALING JAYA:
The National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has approved 3,951,404 loans with a total of RM71 billion disbursed up to the end of last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

More than 2.7 million loans had not been repaid, this amounted to a total of RM32 billion outstanding, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said in a written reply to Pang Hok Liong (PH-Labis).

Pang had asked about PTPTN’s total outstanding debt as of 2023 and the total number of borrowers from the Malay, Chinese, and Indian communities.

Zambry said 2.8 million loans (72%) went to Bumiputera students while 1.1 million loans (28%) were made to non-Bumiputera students.

Zambry added that there are no quotas or allocations set for the PTPTN loans, which are available to all Malaysian citizens offered places at public universities, private universities, and polytechnics.
