PETALING JAYA:
Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has declared a special state holiday tomorrow following Johor Darul Takzim’s (JDT) historic Malaysia Cup win last night.

The Southern Tigers beat Kuching City FC 2-0 in the final at the TM National Stadium in Bukit Jalil to win their fourth consecutive Malaysia Cup title, the only club to have ever achieved such a feat, Bernama reported.

He said the declaration was made with the consent of Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, better known as TMJ, in appreciation of the Johor people and Southern Tigers fans’ undivided support to the team.

“The win is a gift for Bangsa Johor and the fans who have stood united behind the team through thick and thin, in every match and season,” Onn Hafiz posted on Facebook last night, as he also congratulated the players, coaches and team management and the JDT fraternity.

Meanwhile, commenting on the win, JDT head coach Xisco Munoz described winning four consecutive Malaysia Cup titles as a historic feat.

He said the achievement reflected the Southern Tigers’s commitment to continuously pushing themselves to create history and raising the team’s standards year after year.

“Again, it’s coming back to history. JDT is the first club in Malaysia to win four cups in a row and this is important for us because we always try to push ourselves to build something stronger in history,” he was quoted as saying at the post-match press conference.

Munoz also admitted Kuching City provided a tough challenge especially in the first half, however, JDT managed to take control of the game after the break.

Marcos Guilherme and substitute Arif Aiman Hanapi scored a goal each late in the second half to help JDT clinch their sixth Malaysia Cup title in total, having previously won in 2017 and 2019.
