Not possible to defeat Pakatan Harapan for now

Khairul Azwan, Umno Youth Deputy, responded to a letter I wrote in FMT some time back. He seemed a reasonable guy within Umno even though at that time Umno/BN was still in power.

Today, I am returning the favour, responding to his views on how to revive Umno after the party’s hurtful defeat.

Dear Khairul, there is no need really to reinvent the wheel. The defeat of Umno can be easily explained from Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) victory. Just look at how PH won.

1MDB’s folly was only the immediate cause. The rot in Umno started a long time ago.

If not for the rot in Umno, the fiascos of 1MDB, Felda Global Ventures, Lembaga Tabung Haji, the Armed Forces Fund Board (LTAT), Khazanah, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the ringgit tanking, havoc with the GST and the escalating cost of living would not have happened so pervasively and so hurtfully.

Without the massive rot, Umno would not have become so feudalistic, uncaring and insensitive to its own members and the rakyat it governed.

Without the massive rot, Umno would not have become so abrasive and abusive, harassing and belittling the ordinary Ah Beng, opposition politicians as well as Robert Kuok.

It was the rot that provided the push to Umno to conceal, abuse and plunder with impunity.

The journey of PH’s success has been long, tedious and audacious. Just look at the number of talented young men and women they have attracted over the years. Just look at their commitment, zeal and sacrifice when compared with Umno/BN’s members.

Why do you think there are so many people willing to work for PH for free? Why do you think ordinary people are willing to give money to PH so generously? Make no mistake; it was Umno/BN’s rot that provided the impetus.

Umno is no longer supported by the people’s movement or the people’s money. The party is depleted of talents wanting to serve but populated by people only wanting to seek fame and fortune.

Can Umno today organise a rally or stage a social movement like Bersih or Invoke purely based on the zeal and money of its members? I doubt it.

It is not possible to defeat PH, at least not now. To defeat PH, Umno/BN must first get rid of the rot and then pray that the same rot will take root in PH.
