Indonesia beat Vietnam 2-1 in the first leg of the Suzuki Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Hansamu Yama Pranata drew first blood for Indonesia after only seven minutes of play, drawing cheers from the home crowd at the Stadion Pakansari Stadium including President Joko Widodo.

But the host’s happiness didn’t last long, with Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Quyet taking advantage of a penalty to level the score.

Indonesia struck back in the 50th minute after also receiving a penalty that saw Boas Salossa push his side ahead.

It was the first time Indonesia had made a semi-final on the world stage since May, when FIFA lifted a ban on international play.

Indonesia, who top group A, and group B winners Vietnam face each other again in the second leg of the semi-final in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Wednesday.
