BUENOS AIRES: Boca Juniors suffered a 2-0 defeat by Estudiantes on Monday that knocked the Buenos Aires club off the top of the Argentine Superliga for the first time in 617 days.

Second-half goals from Fabián Noguera and Matías Pellegrini gave the team from La Plata a deserved victory and ended Boca’s impressive run that began on December 11, 2016, when they beat arch-rivals River Plate 4-2.

Since then, they have ended every round of fixtures at least level on points at the top of the first tier, winning two league titles in the process.

Monday’s defeat means Boca end the second round of games 11th in the 28-team league.

Estudiantes moved level at the top on a maximum six points with Rosario Central, while Union could join them with a win later on Monday in San Martín.
