National freestyle swimmers set new national record at Asian Games

JAKARTA: The men’s 4x100m freestyle quartet set a new national record in the final of the event in the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games tonight.

Welson Sim, Lim Kit Sern, Chan Jie and Fong Wei Tze posted 3 minutes 21.06 seconds to beat the old record of 3:21.79s set at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017).

They finished in sixth place out of eight teams at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Centre here.

The gold was won by the Japanese quartet who did 3:12.68s, a new Games Record, while China picked up the silver (3:13.29s) and Singapore the bronze (3:17.22s).

The Malaysians qualified for the final after coming in third place in a time of 3:22.89s in the third heat.

Earlier, Chan Jie failed to reach the final of the 100m butterfly when he did not make the cut in the heats.
