IPOH: Terengganu emerged as the overall champion of the 19th Malaysia Games (Sukma) here after collecting 56 gold, 51 silver and 53 bronze medals over 11 days of competition.
This is the fifth overall Sukma title won by the state after claiming the games in 2008 in Kuala Terengganu, 2010 in Melaka, 2011 in Pahang and 2012 in Kuala Lumpur.
The Perak Stadium was opened as early as 5pm with thousands of people waiting at the entrances to watch the closing ceremony.
Spectators were entertained with acrobatic performances by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), as well as several local singers and musicians while waiting for the arrival of the guest of honour.
About 6,000 members of the various state contingents began entering the stadium at 7pm accompanied by thunderous applause and flashing lights all over the stadium.
Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and her husband, Anwar Ibrahim were also present, accompanied by Perak Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu as well as Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
The ceremony continued with the presentation of prizes to the best Sukma athletes, Eugenius Lo Foh Soon and Azreen Nabila Alias.
