Dream start for Malaysian hockey team at the Youth Olympic Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia kicked off their campaign in style in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games by thrashing minnow Vanuatu, 14-0 in the Group A opening match of the men’s hockey five-a-side event at Youth Olympic Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday (Monday in Malaysia).

National junior striker, Mohd Akhimullah Anuar Esook was in his element when he struck seven goals in the match according to the Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) Facebook page.

Other Malaysia’s goals were scored by Noor Firdaus Rosdi in the sixth and 18th minute, Syarman Mat Tee (ninth minute), Muhibuddin Moharam (11th and 12th minute), Amirul Hamizan Azahar (13th minute) and Arif Syafie Ishak in the 18th minute.

Malaysia will meet Mexico in the second preliminary match on Monday (Tuesday in Malaysia).

Other fixtures in Group A saw hosts Argentina edged Zambia 6-2 while Poland beat Mexico 6-3.

Reigning champions, Australia spearhead the Group B challenge alongside India, Austria, Canada, Kenya and Bangladesh.

For the record, Malaysia did not qualify in the previous two editions – 2010 in Singapore and 2014 in China.
