KUALA LUMPUR: National diving queen Pandelela Rinong missed out on a second medal at the Fina World Championship in Gwangju, South Korea, after finishing fifth in the women’s 10m platform, on Wednesday.
After securing her second ticket to the Tokyo Olympic Games by advancing into the final, Pandelela only managed to collect a total of 349.25 points after five rounds of dives, to place fifth out of 12 participants.
Chen Yuxi and Lu Wei of China won the gold and silver medals with 439.00 and 377.80 points respectively, followed by United States’ diver Delaney Schnell who finished third with 364.20 points.
On Sunday, Pandelela and Leong Mun Yee secured their first ticket to 2020 Olympics after winning the silver medal in the women’s 10m synchronised platform.
The result was a slight improvement for Pandelela and Mun Yee as the pair had won the bronze medal in the same event in two previous editions – 2009 in Rome and 2013 in Barcelona.
Pandelela continued her fine form yesterday in the women’s 10m platform after finishing among the top twelve divers, and advanced into the final and automatically qualified to the Olympics.
However, Pandelela was unable to improve her record in the 2015 edition in Kazan where she clinched bronze in the same event.
Pandelela won bronze in the 10m platform at the London Olympics in 2012, becoming the first Malaysian female athlete to win an Olympic medal.
Four years later at the Rio Olympics she won silver in the 10m synchronised platform with Cheong Jun Hoong.
