Early exit for Chan-Goh at Thailand Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Professional national mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying failed to continue their recent momentum when they were shown the exit at the Thailand Open in Bangkok today.

The Rio Olympic silver medallists suffered a first-round exit after going down 18-21, 21-18, 17-21 to Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Ashwini Ponnappa from India.

In the men’s singles, professional player Daren Liew also crashed out in the opening round after going down 13-21, 16-21 to Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong.

National women’s shuttler Soniia Cheah provided some cheers for Malaysia after defeating Supanida Katethong of Thailand with a 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 victory.

The 26-year-old is set to take world No 6 He Bing Jiao of China in the second round on Thursday.

National men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia also cleared his first-round hurdle after besting eighth-seed Sameer Verma of India 21-23, 21-11, 21-5.

Zii Jia is scheduled to meet Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia, who defeated China’s Zhao Jun Peng 21-13, 12-21, 21-13.
