KUALA LUMPUR: The Petronas Sprinta Racing Moto3 team have extended John McPhee’s contract until 2020, following the Scottish rider’s consistent front row qualifying and podium challenges in recent rounds of the championship.
The Malaysian outfit announced that the 25-year-old put pen to paper today at Silverstone ahead of his home race this weekend at the British Grand Prix (GP).
During his first season with the team, McPhee delivered the team’s first ever win at the French GP and finished third at the recent Austrian GP, in order to be one of the sure-fire Moto3 title favourites in 2020.
Team Principal Razlan Razali said McPhee has proven to be a highly professional rider who can perform at every track and the objective in retaining him is to go for championship glory.
“He scored our first race win in Le Mans this year and has contributed to the squad taking a step forward in 2019.
“Confirming McPhee now gives us positive continuity and enables him to focus on results not negotiations,” he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, McPhee is grateful to the team for giving him another opportunity and excited to deliver more outstanding results for the team.
“I have a job to finish between now and the end of the season and my focus will be on that, but I’m also very excited for the future too.
“It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had continuity and it’s great for the team, for me and for the results,” he said.
