CLARK: Hakimi Ismail cemented his status as the undisputed triple jump champion in the region after grabbing his third successive SEA Games gold today.

The 28-year-old father of one was ecstatic after clinching the win for Malaysia with a season’s best jump of 16.68m in his third attempt at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium.

Silver and bronze were won by Philippines’ Mark Harry Diones (16.42m) and Indonesia’s Sapwaturrahman (16.21m) respectively.

“I am grateful for this third gold. I want to thank the National Sports Council, National Sports Institute and Malaysians who were always praying for our contingent’s success,” Hakimi said.

He also dedicated the win to wife Sharifah Mastiara, who is due their second child early next month.

Hakimi said she had sacrificed a lot of her time to take care of their two-year-old son in his absence during training and competitions.

His focus now will shift to qualifying for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
