State funeral service for S R Nathan on Aug 26
The state funeral service will be followed by a private cremation at Mandai Crematorium.
SINGAPORE: A state funeral service for Singapore’s former president S R Nathan will be held from 4pm on Aug 26, at the University Cultural Centre, announced the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
In a statement, the PMO said it would be attended by Nathan’s family, friends and former colleagues, the president, Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, civil servants as well as Singaporeans from all walks of life.
Nathan, 92, passed away at Singapore’s General Hospital at 9.48pm yesterday.
The PMO said the state funeral service will be followed by a private cremation at Mandai Crematorium.
The body will lie in state at Parliament House from 10am on Aug 25 to noon on Aug 26.
The statement noted the public might pay their last respects at Parliament House from 10am to 8pm on Aug 25.
On Aug 26, members of the diplomatic corps and other officials may pay their last respects from 9am to noon.
On July 31, the Prime Minister’s Office announced that Nathan suffered a stroke and was in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the Singapore General Hospital.
Nathan, who was appointed Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia in 1988, was the longest-serving president in Singapore, and was in office for two terms from 1999 to 2011.
