No ban on PKR leaders attending Bill Kayong’s funeral

Sarawak Government gives week-long permission for PKR leaders to pay their last respects to slain Miri PKR branch secretary.

PETALING JAYA:
Top PKR leaders have been given a week-long “green light” to enter Sarawak so they can pay their last respects to slain comrade Bill Kayong.

According to the Borneo Post Online, PKR state leadership council member Baharuddin Mokhsen revealed that the Sarawak Government had given the go ahead for this.

In the run-up to the Sarawak election in May, a long list of Opposition leaders were barred from entering the state, with the administration citing the state’s autonomous immigration powers and on the grounds that it wanted to preserve Sarawak’s harmony.

Bill, who was gunned down yesterday morning, is set to be buried this Friday.

Among those expected to attend the funeral in Miri are PKR President Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR Vice-President Nurul Izzah Anwar as well as party leaders from other states.

Most of the PKR leaders from outside Sarawak are expected to arrive in the state on either Thursday or Friday for Bill’s final send-off.

In accordance to Iban customs, a wake will be held at Bill’s home in Senadin, Miri, from today onwards for friends and relatives to pay their last respects.

Bill, who converted to Islam after marrying Hassyikin Hatta, an Indonesian, will be buried after the Friday prayers at the Muslim cemetery at Batu Satu, Kuala Baram.

The 43-year-old was an advocate of social issues in the state, especially on native customary rights issues, which he brought up in his campaign when contesting in the Bekenu state seat in the recent elections.
