The film — slated to open October 5, 2018 — also has Ruben Fleischer, best known for directing “Zombieland”, in final negotiations to helm the movie project (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Hardy, who starred as Batman villain Bane in 2012’s “Dark Knight Rises” and was nominated for an Oscar for his recent work in “The Revenant”, is reportedly a huge fan of Venom, with Sony posting an image of Hardy proudly sporting a “Venom” t-shirt via its Twitter account today to announce the news.

The Venom film will be one of the first in a series of Marvel and Spider-Man-based universe movies that Sony has in store, with the studio also developing a Silver Sable/Black Cat project among others to be based around characters from the Spider-Man stable.
