Speaking to reporters at the PKR headquarters today, Wong said Malaysia’s foreign policy had become one of the worst in the world since Prime Minister Najib Razak assumed office.
He said there was a marked difference between the Najib administration’s foreign policy and the policy pursued by the Mahathir administration. Mahathir, he said, was focused on uniting third world countries against the superpowers whereas Najib seemed to be “running back and forth” between China and the United States.
As a result, Malaysia was now “stuck in the middle,” he added.
Wong said a good foreign policy would often be good for the economy.
“Back during Mahathir’s time, the economy was good and strong,” he said. “As a third world country, you need to have some money. Only then will others look up to you.
“Mahathir made the country economically strong. Abdullah Badawi was a kind man and brought democracy back to the country. Najib has not only managed to run the economy to the ground, he isn’t doing too good in terms of democracy either.
“I’m very sad to say that might be Najib’s legacy.”
