Gerakan says voters have the right to know the common stand on the controversial law.

PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan (PH) must state their stand on hudud before formalising the pact this weekend, Gerakan said.

The party’s Central Law and Human Rights Bureau chairman Baljit Singh, in a statement, said voters had the right to know the common stand of the newly formed Opposition coalition with regard to the Syariah-based law.

The “farcical and confusing political soap opera” by Pakatan Rakyat involving the same PH leaders, he said, remained fresh and vivid in the minds of Malaysians.

Baljit added that many critical questions were either left unanswered or have been totally ignored by DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), the new coalition partners, especially on the subject of hudud.

“Will they be giving a joint declaration on hudud or joining Gerakan to stop PAS’s hudud in this coming Parliament sitting? Will Amanah drop hudud if DAP is against it?

“They must first answer these questions before signing a new agreement as the public demands a clear and unambiguous answer.”

Baljit also said the “ghost of Pakatan Rakyat” was still very much alive and claimed the latest political rebranding did not offer much changes.

The new coalition, he claimed, was a deliberate attempt to cover up differences and their the failure to achieve consensus.

“They can always call themselves a new coalition whenever they fail to overcome differences or deal with issues that have arisen, but that does not solve the problems.”

The contentious issue of hudud, had driven a wedge between Pakatan Rakyat colleagues, DAP and PAS, which led to a fall out between the two parties and subsequently the demise of the coalition.

This in turn saw the formation of PH comprising DAP, PKR and Amanah, the latter a party set-up by former PAS members from the progressive faction.

Amanah had previously stated that hudud was not their priority at the moment.
