PETALING JAYA:
PKR Secretary-General Rafizi Ramli today declared that he would file parliamentary motions to pressure Tabung Haji (TH) and Retirement Fund Incorporated (KWAP) to demand immediate repayment of the RM1.5 billion they lent to 1MDB.

He said in a press statement that he would file the motions for tabling at the parliamentary session scheduled for March.

The Pandan MP also said he would write to TH and KWAP’s respective management to ask them to stop 1MDB’s sale of Bandar Malaysia to the Iskandar Malaysia Holdings-China Railway Engineering Corp (IWH-CREC) Consortium.

“The transaction will have an impact on national security and defence since it involves the moving and upgrading of air force bases throughout the country,” he said.

“I will be taking these actions in view of the fact that 60 per cent of 1MDB’s stake in Bandar Malaysia is subject to approval from TH and KWAP.”

Rafizi issued his statement in response to 1MDB’s assertion yesterday that it could transfer shares to IWH-CREC only with the approval of TH and KWAP, who are the holders of its sukuk bonds.

According to Rafizi, TH and KWAP had lent a total of RM1.5 billion to 1MDB to help it pay for the relocation of eight army bases in Bandar Malaysia, previously known as the Sungai Besi Air Force Base.

“Now the funds are gone, 1MDB is still in debt and it needs to settle financial liabilities of RM1.9 billion in regard to the relocation works. 1MDB had to sell 60 per cent of its stake in Bandar Malaysia to reduce other debts.

“But until now, there is no indication as to who will be settling 1MDB’s RM1.5 billion debt to TH and KWAP.

“Taking into account all of the financial problems caused by 1MDB to the extent that it has to sell national assets, I believe TH and KWAP should reclaim the RM1.5 billion debt immediately to protect the public’s savings,” the Pandan MP added.
