PETALING JAYA: A primary school teacher in Sungai Petani, Kedah, is being probed by the cops and the Education Ministry for allegedly beating up a 12-year-old student.

According to news reports, the teacher, a student affairs senior assistant, choked, punched and stomped on Year Six Student Khairul Najwan Jamsari because the boy was late for school and had used a bicycle with a modified handlebar, on Thursday.

The teacher then allegedly gave the victim RM2 to keep mum about the incident and even reportedly defended his actions when confronted by the victim’s father, saying it was right to physically punish pupils.

Khairul Najwan’s technician father lodged a police report following the incident and police confirmed the teacher was being probed for voluntarily causing hurt.

Reports also quoted Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan saying the incident “should not have happened”, and that the ministry would take action against the teacher once they received a full report on the incident.
