Hilmi: 30,000 new cancer cases reported yearly

Deputy Health Minister Hilmi Yahaya says cancer is the fourth highest cause of death with 13.02% at government hospitals in 2014.

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Health Minister Hilmi Yahaya says although the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM) estimates that 100,000 people are suffering from cancer, less than 30,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed and reported each year.

“The total (number of) cases reported are registered at the National Cancer Registry.

“Cancer is the fourth highest cause of death with 13.02% at government hospitals in 2014,” he said in a statement to Bernama yesterday

He said the Health Ministry’s data for 2007 showed that the five major cancer ailments experienced by the people in the country were breast cancer at 18.1%, colon cancer 12.3%, lung cancer 10.2%, throat cancer 5.2% and cervical cancer at 4.6%.
