PETALING JAYA:
The issue of overlapping seats in the Sarawak election next month has not affected the cordial ties currently enjoyed by PKR and DAP, Nurul Izzah Anwar says.

At a press conference on the Sarawak election, the PKR vice-president, who is also one of the party’s two election directors, said ties between the parties were in fact far stronger than any electoral arrangement she knew of.

Nurul, who is also MP for Lembah Pantai, said this when responding to questions on the issue of overlapping seats between the two Pakatan Harapan allies in Sarawak.

She said it was time for everyone to move on as enough had already been said on the subject, a sentiment shared by Tony Pua of the DAP as well.

“It is time to reorientate our focus on our candidates fighting it out against the BN (Barisan Nasional).

“We will handle what needs to be handled after the election,” she said, adding that she was confident Pakatan Harapan would prevail in this challenge.

Tensions between both PKR and DAP have been running high due to the issue of overlapping seats, with leaders from both sides trading salvos over the issue.

As things stand, both parties will contest against each other as well as the BN and independent candidates in six seats, namely Batu Kitang, Mulu, Mambong, Murum, Ngemah, Simanggang.

Meanwhile, PKR Wanita Chief Zuraidah Kamaruddin, who was also at the press conference, warned that if Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem won with a big majority, Prime Minister Najib Razak would use the immense support he was enjoying in Sarawak as a mandate to raise the Goods and Services Tax rate from 6% to 10% by 2017, as many economists had already predicted.

She said Putrajaya had failed to implement policies that helped the people and the Sarawak election could be used as a referendum on the GST.
