“This is the (influence) of the new Filipino president, infecting everyone to shoot (criminals),” he said to reporters at the Parliament lobby here today.
The Kinabatangan MP had suggested in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that drug addicts and dealers should simply be shot.
This suggestion is similar to that proposed by Duterte in his election campaign. Duterte had pledged to shoot dead any suspected criminal in order to reduce the crime rate.
However, according to Nur Jazlan, Malaysia has its own legal provisions in dealing with criminals. None of them involves shooting suspects on sight.
Speaking on another matter, the Pulai MP said the police force’s plan to install CCTV cameras in certain areas of the country might affect the public’s privacy.
“However fighting crime is much more important than privacy concerns.”
The cameras, he added, would be the eyes and ears of the police and would be equipped with facial recognition software. The plan, however, has yet to be approved.
