“They claim to be multiracial and are trying very hard to cover their chauvinistic image. But one just has to recall the Selangor DAP election last year,” he said.
Puchong lawmaker Gobind Singh Deo won the election with the highest number of votes last year after garnering 736 votes whereas Tony Pua obtained 495 votes.
Despite this, Pua was reappointed chairman and Gobind named as his deputy.
Ti, who is also MCA’s Religious Harmony Bureau Chairman, also noted that DAP had not taken any action against Hew Kuan Yau over a racist speech made on the eve of the Sarawak election.
The DAP firebrand, commonly known as “Superman” for his penchant for wearing T-shirts displaying the superhero, sparked controversy after he urged voters in Sarawak’s capital to support its candidate, Abdul Aziz Isa, so the latter could “screw the Malays, the big corrupt politicians, screw ‘pok kai’ Parti Bersatu Bumiputera (PBB)”.
This Ti said, showed that Zairil’s assertion that there was “no place for racial politics” in DAP was a fallacy.
Ti also alleged that this showed that DAP relied on racist taunts and statements to appeal to their supporters.
“So how can you claim to be non-racial when you breathe, talk and taunt in racist tones at all times?” Ti asked.
Zairil, who is Bukit Bendera MP, had on Wednesday claimed that DAP had over the past few years made efforts to move beyond such racial politics.
Ti then claimed that Zairil’s statement was one made for political survival.
