Shahbudin: PAS must be pragmatic on by-elections

Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar is the opportunity for a new beginning, where PAS can decide whether it wants to remain on the best of terms with Pakatan or Najib.

PETALING JAYA:
The issue that has arisen in Selangor, in the wake of the by-election in Sungai Besar – and another in Kuala Kangsar – is whether PAS would back down and stop claiming that its decision to contest the two by-elections could not be changed. “Let’s see whether they love their Exco posts in Selangor more than their ostensibly principled stand on the by-elections,” said political analyst Shahbudin Husin in his latest blog posting.

“PAS needs to move fast and disclose their decision on the two by-elections.”

He was commenting on news that Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali did warn the three PAS Exco in Selangor that they would have to resign their positions in the government if the party decided to enter the fray in Sungei Besar next month.

“Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali, who is the Information Chief for the Dewan Ulama PAS, has since confirmed that Azmin did warn the three PAS Exco.”

“It must be true since it comes from the ulama. They can’t be spinning yarns as well.”

Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, continued the analyst, was the opportunity for a new beginning. “PAS has to decide whether it wants to remain on the best of terms with Pakatan Harapan, the informal national alliance.”

Alternatively, PAS can remain a shelter of sorts for Najib Razak.

No matter what the situation, said Shahbudin, Azmin needs more than a pat on the back for demonstrating that Pakatan was steady in its dominance in the Opposition and was on the way to emerging as the new government in Putrajaya.
