JOHOR BAHRU:
Police detained a man in Selangor last night to assist in the investigation into a case of insulting the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, via the social website Facebook.

Johor Police Chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the 23-year-old man, who works as an assistant cook, was detained about 8pm at Taman Intan, near Dengkil.

“At 10.15am yesterday, police received a report regarding an offensive message sent via Facebook aimed at insulting and offending the Tunku Mahkota of Johor.

“The suspect was found to have uploaded the message on Facebook in the name of Aiden Chew,” he said in a statement today.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said police also seized several SIM cards from the man.

He said the remand application for the suspect would be submitted at the Magistrate’s Court here today to enable police to complete investigation under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said police advised members of the public against abusing the social website.

A special team had also been set up by Johor police to monitor, track down and take action against those abusing the social website, he added.
