Nazir wants Huckle’s fellow inmates to mete out justice

Banker says court sentences are too light for the atrocities committed against children by Richard Huckle.

PETALING JAYA:
Nazir Razak, in an Instagram post today, bemoaned what he sees as an overly lenient punishment for convicted UK paedophile Richard Huckle.

He hoped Huckle’s fellow inmates would mete out the appropriate justice.

“Is this enough punishment??? He abused children aged between 6 months and 12 years, kept a diary of his activities and posted pics and videos,” the chairman of Malaysia’s CIMB Group Holdings Berhad said of Huckle, who was on Monday handed 22 life sentences for 71 counts of child sex offences.

“I urge his inmates to mete out more just retribution,” Nazir added.

The call for violence against Huckle was lauded by a number of netizens, though others criticised the idea of mob justice and urged for better handling of the larger problem of paedophilia in society.

“He should be castrated,” said Instagram user fizagolightly, while fellow user dbh.jk said in Malay that Huckle “mau kena rejam sampai mati je (asks to be stoned to death)”.

“Why don’t we ‘jolok’ him then we record the scene and make a diary from it? Buat dia rasa apa yang dia buat (make him feel what he had done),” said user joha_joho in a less civilised call for prison rape.

However, user raillealis criticised these calls, asking if they were promoting mob justice.

User kyanjoelxander said it was rather worrying that it was the UK Government that arrested Huckle for crimes committed in Malaysia.

This sentiment was shared by user thammycsh who added that Huckle was only one of thousands of paedophiles in society.

“So much groundwork and education needs to be done! Only education and awareness can help create a safer space for our children!” thammycsh wrote.

User peggz._ said it was time Malaysia looked at how it handled local paedophiles, given how the UK authorities had taken responsibility for crimes committed outside their country.
