M’sian startup wins Asian entrepreneurship award

BorderPass's unique “cloud passport” idea impresses the panellists in Japan and wins one million yen (RM38,140).

KUALA LUMPUR:
A Malaysian startup, BorderPass, has emerged as the champion in the final competition of the Asian Entrepreneurship Award (AEA) 2016 held on June 7 in Tokyo, Japan.

In a statement today, Putra Business School (PBS) said BorderPass’s unique “cloud passport” idea impressed the panellists and brought home one million yen (RM38,140) and received two years of free office space at 31 Ventures by Mitsui Fudosan.

“Malaysia was among the first nations globally to use biometric passports and automated gates at the airport.

“The technology covers 3D facial and iris recognition, touchless ten-finger fingerprint and thermo scanner and other biometric systems,” it said.

The event, now in its fifth year, features 27 startups from 14 countries.

It was hosted by Future Design Centre Inc Association while the co-hosts were Division of University Corporate Relations, University of Tokyo.

BorderPass is one of the two startups nominated by PBS, a TX Entrepreneur Partner General Inc Association/Kashiwa Open Innovation Lab Global Partner for last three years.

Manager of Community Development and Impact in PBS and the nominating committee member for Malaysia, Dr Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff, and BorderPass Chief Executive Officer Faisal Ariff received the award.
