PETALING JAYA:
Police have confirmed that Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) Chairman R Sri Sanjeevan was arrested for allegedly extorting money.

Police are also calling on others who have been blackmailed to step forward and assist in investigations.

In a statement, Bukit Aman CID Director Mohmad Salleh also revealed the identity of Sanjeevan’s driver, who was also arrested along with him last night.

Both Sanjeevan and the driver were arrested under Section 506 and 385 of the Penal Code and will be remanded until Friday, June 24.

Mohmad said a police report was filed by an unnamed complainant, stating Sanjeevan had allegedly threatened to publish accusations against the complainant, unless he paid Sanjeevan RM25,000 in protection money.

The arrest was made after the complainant allegedly handed the money to Sanjeevan in his Toyota Vellfire near the Nilai Toll Plaza.

Earlier today, it was reported that an anti-crime watchdog chief was nabbed by the police last night for alleged extortion.

Sources said the arrest was made following a complaint by the 38-year-old illegal gambling business owner, who claimed he had received a call from a man asking for RM25,000 in “protection” money on Monday.

Sources said the suspect, a Datuk, had allegedly threatened to expose on his Facebook, or to the media, or the police, the complainant’s alleged illegal business dealings if he failed to pay the protection money.

The complainant went to the police, who then apparently laid the “trap” for the suspect.
The complainant also reportedly had audio recordings of the Datuk allegedly threatening him to “play ball” or risk having his activities exposed.

Apart from the RM25,000, police also recovered RM16,000 from the suspect’s vehicle and five handphones. The police also confiscated the vehicle.
