Malay tabloid Kosmo reported that the incident happened at about 9am at a petrol station in Guchil, Kuala Krai.
The victim, Saifuddin Ismail, was reported to have been playing with a lighter in the backseat while his mother was filling up petrol for the car.
His father, Ismail Din, 36, later told reporters that a fire engulfed the boy, causing the boy’s mother to immediately drag the boy out of the car.
The woman also suffered burns in the process.
Saifuddin, who reportedly suffered burns to 15 per cent of his body, is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II.
