KUALA LUMPUR: Anti crime watchdog MyWatch chairman, R Sri Sanjeevan was today remanded for 21 days under the Prevention of Crime Act (Poca).

His lawyer Preakas Sampunathan said magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahab granted the remand, which would expire on July 31.

After the expiration of this remand period, the police can seek an extension of up to 38 days, said Preakas.

“We objected to the remand (in chambers) because the arrest does not fall under Poca,” he told reporters.

Under Poca, suspected criminals can be detained without trial for up to two years.

Sanjeevan was re-arrested yesterday, for the seventh time since he was first picked up on June 23 for allegedly extorting RM25,000 in “protection” money from an illegal four-digit business operator.

He faces at least 14 charges, including forgery, cheating, defamation and money laundering.
