The statement on his Facebook page yesterday was Fernandes’ most recent “teaser” to what was once a popular route under the roster for AirAsia X, the long-haul arm of Asia’s biggest budget airline.
In March last year, the AirAsia co-founder said AirAsia X hoped to resume flights to Europe early this year using new, fuel-efficient jets to tap into the growing demand from travellers.
Prior to that, in November 2014, Fernandes was reported to have said that AirAsia X was looking to revive flights to London as early as 2015.
Fernandes sent out a tweet at the time saying that “the reopening of KL-London is definitely on the cards”.
“KL-London is the most wanted route for AAX, and we will deliver it. I am quite sure.”
The airline had suspended all flights to Europe, including London and Paris, in March 2012, due to high operating costs. The Kuala Lumpur and London route was launched by AirAsia X in March 2009.
AirAsia X currently flies to multiple destinations in China, India and Japan, as well as to a few Australian cities.
