GEORGE TOWN:
A three-hour downpour paralysed traffic in the southern part of the island, leaving hundreds of cars in a gridlock and many missing flights from the airport in Bayan Lepas.

The traffic situation at the southern end of Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah had not eased completely by late evening after rain wreaked havoc about 3pm, causing monsoon drains to overflow and reducing several roads to a lane.

The road is the only way for those headed to the airport and the greater Bayan Lepas area.

Penang Government officials had predicted the supermoon phenomenon, where heavier than usual rain was expected.

State executive councillor in charge of natural disasters Phee Boon Poh, said the super moon phenomenon caused high tide, which made it difficult for waters to subside.

He said the government’s focus was to help an unknown number of displaced families in Teluk Bahang, with floodwaters reaching 0.6m. An average of 70mm rainfall was recorded between 3pm and 5pm.

“Our main concern are the evacuees. Those displaced have been placed in community halls.

“As of now I cannot tell the exact number of those displaced, but most are from Teluk Bahang.

“All Village Security and Development Committee members on the mainland have been roped in to help in clear-up efforts,” he said when contacted.

Phee said food packets have been handed out to those affected through the state Welfare Department.
