Timur Laut Police Chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the men, aged between 16 and 40, were picked up at several locations in Penang from 2am to 8am today.
“In the 11.30pm incident, the bus carrying 40 Kedah supporters was on its way home to Alor Setar when approached by 15 to 20 motorcyclists in Jalan Datuk Keramat.
“They (motorcyclists), believed to be Penang team supporters, hurled stones at the bus, causing cracks on both sides of its windows, broke the tail lamp and dented its body,” he told a press conference here today.
The incident occurred after a Super League football match where Penang defeated Kedah 3-2. This led to a commotion and police had to escort the bus to the Timur Laut police headquarters.
Mior Faridalatrash said the 31-year-old bus driver had lodged a police report and claimed that the total losses incurred were estimated at over RM20,000.
However, no one was reportedly injured, he said.
He said the six men, including two civil servants, were arrested based on registration numbers detected on their motorcycles and that police had identified 10 other motorcycles believed to be involved in the incident.
“Those detained will be remanded tomorrow and we are asking others involved in the incident to surrender themselves,” he said.
Investigations revealed that the incident was caused by provocation between the supporters of both teams since they were inside the stadium.
Mior Faridalatrash also said police had identified several men, believed to be supporters of the Selangor team, who hurled smoke bombs onto the pitch, causing a commotion during a match against Penang at City Stadium here on Sunday.
Video recordings, which have gone viral, revealed that Selangor team supporters had initiated the commotion during the Super League match.
