Police dismiss Umno Youth leader’s allegations

IGP says police will not pursue report that Zeti, Gani and Abu Kassim were involved in a plot against the PM as it was based on mere assumptions.

SHAH ALAM:
Police are not pursuing the investigation into a report by Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun about a conspiracy against the prime minister by three top Malaysian officials involved in investigating 1MDB.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said Tuesday that after recording a statement from Khairul Azwan, police concluded that his report was based solely on assumptions.

“He couldn’t furnish us with any proof to this allegation, thus we do not wish to continue investigating this case.

“He might have heard or read the ‘news’ elsewhere, which prompted him to file a report.

“But if you can’t provide evidence to an allegation, do not simply lodge a report as it is a waste of our resources,” The Star reported Khalid as saying at a Hari Raya Puasa open house at the Selangor police contingent headquarters.

Malay Mail Online quoted Khalid as saying police would not record statements from the three persons mentioned in Khairul’s report.

“We don’t want to waste our time calling people when there are no real good grounds to do so,” he added.

Khairul Azwan had lodged a police report against former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Abu Kassim Mohamed.

He had claimed they were suspected to be involved in a conspiracy to topple Prime Minister Najib Razak and his government.

“I have valid reasons to believe these individuals have provided confidential information and documents to the agencies in the United States, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” he had said.

This followed the filing of civil forfeiture suits by the US Department of Justice against several Malaysians said to be linked to 1MDB.

On another matter, Khalid said the police officers who had allegedly assaulted two teenagers would be investigated.

Malay Mail Online reported him as saying: “As usual, we will investigate. Surely, if there is enough evidence that they are involved or they did abuse their power and assault the teens, they will be charged.”

It was reported yesterday that two 14-year-old boys, who had been picked up by the police to assist in investigations into a fight, claimed that they were slapped, kicked and beaten with a hose by three policemen and one policewoman after being ordered to strip naked.
