Speaking at a party function in Tanjong Piai, Johor, today, Lim said the leaders of the government and important national enforcement and investigative institutions and agencies had failed Malaysia by not lifting a finger to defend the country’s sovereignty and reputation from the effects of the 1MDB financial scandal.
He urged the prime minister, Najib Razak, to perform his duty and “subordinate his personal interests to national interests” by going to the United Nations to speak at the general assembly.
The government announced last month that deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would be attending the plenary session of the general assembly this year.
However, Lim said Najib should go, and that an all-party delegation of MPs be sent, in order to “purge and cleanse Malaysia of the international indictment of an overnight global kleptocracy”.
He said Parliament should have been summoned to meet in the past six weeks after the US Justice Department filed civil suits to seize US$1 billion in assets allegedly bought with money stolen from 1Malaysia Development Berhad.
The US action was carried out under its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.
