PETALING JAYA:
Bersih 2.0 Chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah fears for her safety after army veteran Mohd Ali Baharom recently threatened her for organising the Bersih 5 rally.

“I have a family and three boys. I’m definitely worried,” she said when contacted by FMT.

FMT earlier reported Ali, better known as Ali Tinju, warning Chin to “watch her back” or she may no longer “walk on this earth”.

Ali also threatened that he will make Chin’s “legs point upwards and her head point downwards to the ground”.

His remarks came following Chin’s confirmation that the fifth instalment of the Bersih rally was scheduled to take place on Nov 19.

Chin has since labelled Ali Tinju’s threat that his group would ambush her and turn her head upside down as a form of violence against women.

She also said it was ironic that police decided against taking action on Ali Tinju despite his remarks, but instead, chose to arrest a former journalist, Sidek Kamiso, yesterday over allegations of insulting Islam.

“And here we have Ali Tinju issuing threats and the police are particularly silent.”

Chin said she also feared for the safety of the Bersih 2.0 steering committee following Ali Tinju’s threats.

“Today, it might be me. But tomorrow it may be someone else. We are only conducting a rally and a convoy. Why do we need to resort to threats of violence?”

Chin, however, appeared unfazed by Red Shirts leader Jamal Yunos’ pledge to organise a counter rally against the upcoming Bersih 5 rally.

“These people had better stop issuing threats and instead look at what we are trying to do.

“In Malaysia, we have enough room for differing opinions and we don’t have to resort to violence,” she pointed out.

She also said “this is not the way Malaysians work” and insisted that Bersih 5 was a peaceful rally.

Chin remained confident that police will be able to maintain peace and order during the upcoming rallies and roadshows by Bersih 2.0, but stressed that the cops must be vigilant and take stern action in the event any violence did erupt.

“Police should also take responsibility and not leave it as though it is not serious. I expect the police to keep peace.”
