KUALA LUMPUR: Only one police officer has been jailed for causing the death of a detainee.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, in a written reply, said the police officer was found to have caused the death of a detainee in the Taipan police station lock-up on Jan 20, 2009.

“The suspect was sentenced to three years in jail for each charge,” Zahid said, without specifying the nature of the charges.

He said another police officer was acquitted for an incident that took place on May 21, 2013. The detainee died while being held at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters, here.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, was responding to N Surendran (PKR-Padang Serai), who wanted to know what disciplinary action had been taken against police officers over the numerous deaths in lock-ups and shootouts since 2005.

The written reply also listed three cases of shootouts that caused deaths and injuries.

Zahid said a policeman was charged for murder in Batu Arang, Selangor, in 2006, and was later sentenced to death after his appeal was rejected by the Court of Appeal.

In 2010, a policeman was charged for causing the death of a teenager in an MPV in Shah Alan. The suspect was however freed by the High Court in December 2012.

In 2015, a policeman was charged for causing the death of a snatch theft suspect in Gurun, Kedah, and was now awaiting trial.
