KOTA KINABALU: The 31st annual Parti Bersatu Sabah congress is going ahead today and tomorrow despite Prime Minister Najib Razak being unable to officiate at the event, said party Secretary-General Johnny Mositun.

He cited “unavoidable circumstances” for the prime minister being unable to attend the event, adding that Najib expressed his regrets and sent his apologies, he said in the Borneo Post.

Najib, however, had a message for PBS in its souvenir book for the congress.

He assured the party, with its own uniqueness, remained a key component member of the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) as it worked for the people, and their interests, in fulfilling their aspirations.

In organising the congress, said the prime minister, the party displayed its strong sense of ownership in upholding democracy.

The Federal Government, on its part, will ensure security and sustainable development for Sabah, he said.

“The priority will be given to improving the well-being of the people of Sabah,” Najib said.

He cautioned that everyone in BN must draw a line between political rhetoric and issues that genuinely affect the people. “They should equip themselves with useful knowledge,” he said. “These will help them deal with issues that arise.”

PBS President Joseph Pairin Kitingan will officiate at its annual congress this year.

The opening ceremony will be held at the Hongkod Koisaan Hall in Penampang, in the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu. The secretary-general’s and treasurer-general’s reports would be tabled.

There would also be debates on the president’s policy speech.

The conference for its Youth and Women’s wings would be opened simultaneously today by deputy president Maximus Jonity Ongkili.
