Maria was arrested on Friday under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, an anti-terrorism law, a day before the Bersih 5 street demonstration in the centre of the federal capital.
Her lawyer, R. Sivarasa, said she was being held in solitary confinement at an undisclosed location “in a cell with no windows” that remains fully lit for 24 hours. He was quoted as suggesting that these were torturous conditions by international standards”.
Maria’s father, younger sister Cynthia Chin, and Maria’s three sons, Azumin, Aziman and Azemi, were allowed to meet her at Dang Wangi station.
Cynthia said Maria appeared tired. “We were allowed to bring her food but she said she did not have the appetite. She is in good spirits. She told us to continue the fight,” Cynthia said, according to Star Online.
Aziman was quoted as saying his mother looked visibly tired but seemed fine. “She asked us to congratulate everyone who came for the rally,” he said.
Under the Sosma law, Chin might be detained for up to 28 days. The leader of the Red Shirt movement, Jamal Md Yunus, has been remanded until Tuesday. Police also arrested about 15 others, some of whom were expected to be released tonight.
