KUALA LUMPUR:
Lawyer N Surendran has taken Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to task after the home minister appeared to have washed his hands off the detention of Maria Chin Abdullah under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, had allegedly passed the buck to the Inspector-General of Police and Attorney-General when asked by reporters why the need to detain the Bersih 2.0 chairperson under Sosma.

“On that, we ask that the Attorney-General and the Inspector-General of Police answer. I don’t want to touch on their operational matters,” Zahid was quoted in Malaysiakini as saying.

“It is irresponsible for Zahid to try to avoid all explanation by claiming that the arrest is an ‘operational’ matter. The home minister is answerable for all actions of the police force, including ‘operational’ matters,” said Surendran, who is also Padang Serai lawmaker.

“Maria’s detention is a matter of national concern, and has made international news. We are entitled to demand answers from the home minister, and he is obliged to answer.”

Surendran said Zahid, as home minister, must explain why the police have detained a respected civil society leader like Maria under a provision meant to tackle terrorism.

“It is laughable to think that Maria Chin poses any threat to society.

Far from being a security threat, she is a hero to millions of Malaysians who seek peaceful change and fair elections in our country. This can be seen from the massive crowds that flooded the streets of the capital over the weekend in support of the Bersih movement led by her.”

Maria was arrested on Friday during a raid on Bersih’s office.

“Since Zahid does not appear to be prepared to explain or defend Maria Chin’s detention, she must be immediately and unconditionally released,” the lawmaker added.
