Parliamentarians Mujahid Yusof Rawa (Amanah-Parit Buntar) and Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) asked for more protection for security personnel at the Dewan Rakyat after an attempted assault on Khalid Samad (Amanah-Shah Alam) by a mob this morning.
“This is necessary. They (security personnel) tried to protect Khalid and were assaulted. This was not the first time.
“You had a hearing in 2009 over an attempt on Karpal Singh (the late Bukit Gelugor MP). The culprits were just fined. We don’t want the Parliament grounds exposed,” they said, referring to an incident on Feb 26, 2009, when a group of Umno Youth members confronted the late Karpal Singh while he was on his way to the Parliament chamber. The veteran MP had earlier accused Umno of being responsible for a bullet threat he had received via mail.
G Manivannan (PKR-Kapar) then revealed the names of the security personnel who were injured while protecting Khalid.
“Shahrol, Farid and Shafizan were injured,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.
After the attack on Khalid Samad, several police officers were injured. One of them was seen nursing a bleeding nose.
R Sivarasa (Subang-PKR) proposed imposing a seven-year jail sentence on the culprits.
Later in the Dewan, Khalid thanked the parliament security team for protecting him.
Tiong King Sing (BN-Bintulu) said the country has become chaotic since BN lost its two-thirds majority in Parliament.
“Sooner or later we will all fight,” he said.
However, Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz (Umno-Tanah Merah) raised the issue of the word “sial”, which he said was sensitive to the Malay community.
Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman caused a ruckus in Parliament after he called Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) the only woman with a “Kok”. This caused Khalid to call Tajuddin a “sial” (cursed or damned) minister.
