Saifuddin: Zahid trying to charm the west with Hitler comment

Zaid Ibrahim claims BN controls media, planting fear, stamping out dissent just as Nazis did when ruling Germany from 1934 to 1945.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two former Umno leaders have spoken up against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for saying that the opposition in Malaysia are like Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, for wanting to destroy Barisan Nasional’s image.

PKR’s Saifuddin Abdullah dismissed Zahid as trying to charm the west by likening the opposition to Hitler.

“He is doing this for his own political gain. He wants the west to see him as someone dear to them.

“This is his way of impressing the west as a worthy prime minister in waiting,” the former deputy higher education minister said.

Saifuddin, who is now the Pakatan Harapan secretariat chief, added that Zahid did not understand the meaning of democracy.

“If he understands the meaning of democracy, he will know that the opposition is doing what is needful for the people and that it is the Barisan Nasional that is doing harm them.”

“The deputy prime minister and his boss are in a state of panic. The description Zahid gave is more suited to Umno.

“They are panicking because they are likely to lose the 14th general election (GE14),” the former defacto law minister said.

The next general election needs to be called no later than two months after the current Parliament is dissolved, and that makes the last possible date for GE14 to be Aug 24, 2018.

Yesterday, Zahid had also said Malaysia’s success at being the only Muslim-led multiracial country in the world had made it an object of envy, not only to outsiders but also to those from within the country itself.

“As a result, the opposition had to cook up all sorts of ‘storylines’ to destroy the ruling party,” Zahid added.

Zaid rebutted this saying that Umno was the one controlling the broadcast and print media to spread only government-related news and create fear within the people with heavy handed policing.

“They are creating fear, using thugs and police action too,” Zaid said.

Asked about Zahid’s assertion that Najib was chosen by Allah to lead Umno and the country, Saifuddin said that sometimes God allows things to happen to test the people’s faith.

“No one really knows who Allah chooses to be a leader of a country. Sometimes Allah allows things to happen in a certain way as a test of the people’s faith.

“How else can we explain why Firaun was there?,” Saifuddin said referring to the rulers of ancient Egypt, using the Malay term for Pharaoh.

The pharaohs were absolute monarchs and lived in glorious opulence, decorating themselves with gold and perfumes, while selfishly taking their treasures with them to their graves.

Zaid laughed off Zahid’s comment, saying: “I don’t think God chose Najib. God has a lot more important things to do.”
