PETALING JAYA:
Controversial cartoonist Zunar has thanked Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar for mooting the idea of drawing children’s cartoon characters, hinting that he may create Disney-inspired satirical political caricatures from now on.

“I never drew Donald Duck in my whole life, but the IGP gave me the idea. I would like to thank him for this,” Zunar said in a WhatsApp message.

Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, was responding to a remark made by Khalid last Friday, that the cartoonist should not propagate hatred towards the government as it was not the Malaysian culture to insult leaders.

Khalid said Zunar could instead draw whatever else he wanted such as “old mcdonald” or “donald duck”, as long as he did not insult anyone.

“I hope he won’t arrest me for following his suggestion,” a defiant Zunar said.

This morning, Zunar published several caricatures featuring Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse on his Facebook page but in a satirical tone that poked fun at the present political scenario in the country.

The cartoons garnered over 2,500 likes and more than 600 shares in just three hours.

Zunar was detained by police and investigated for disturbing the peace when he held an exhibition in Komtar recently. This has been his tenth arrest pertaining to his cartoons to date.

Zunar’s exhibition in Komtar two weeks ago, nearly caused him to be assaulted by an angry mob of 30 people, some of whom were allegedly from Umno Youth.

His exhibition showcased drawings of his that depicted the prime minister and other national leaders in a bad light, the mob said.
