Hicoat president Arun Doraisamy told FMT that his group is looking for Johann, adding they have sent messages to his Facebook page.
Arun said his group provides help to anyone who has trouble with errors in their IC.
“Our service is not limited to Hindus. In fact, I helped a Christian Dayak family who were registered as Muslims,” he said.
Arun and the Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association (PPMM) had previously joined forces to create a technical team to help Hindus who were wrongly registered as Muslims by the National Registration Department (NRD).
The team said they will provide help to correct this problem through legal means.
Yesterday, FMT reported that Johann, from Penang, had been bogged down with problems over his religious status in his IC.
The 34-year-old was born to Buddhist parents, but due to a mistake, he was registered as a Muslim.
He had said that he tried numerous times to have the error rectified by the NRD, but they kept telling him to go to the Shariah Court.
“No religious department in the country has any record of me being a Muslim. I have signed a statutory declaration proclaiming I am not a Muslim.”
“Why am I now told to go to the Shariah Court when I am not a Muslim?” he asked.
Lawyer Annou Xavier, who handled most citizenship cases, said Johann can go to the court to seek closure.
He added the Registrar of Births has the power to amend his IC and give him a new card.
“He has to go to court to obtain an order to direct the NRD to rectify that error since the registrar had refused to change his religious status,” Xavier said.
