Did business rivalry lead to Penang woman’s death?
Logistics executive had been known to be ‘heavily involved’ in husband’s moneylending business, according to her friend.
The friend, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Ruby Lee Poh Ai, 49, was also very close to the expatriate community in Penang, spoke fluent English and attended parties with the elite.
“Everyone knows her. We all know that she and her husband ran a moneylending service.
“I suspect this could be due to business (rivalry), but this is our guess. We are deeply shocked at her passing and we mourn for her,” the person close to Lee told FMT.
Lee, the owner of a logistics company, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Bayan Lepas on Tuesday.
Gunmen on a motorcycle fired 10 shots at her BMW, six of which hit her, killing her on the spot.
Lee was only 200m away from her office at the time.
When contacted, Penang police chief Chuah Ghee Lye refused to comment on the claim, saying, “The moneylending factor is one of many leads we are pursuing. I have no further comment. Let us investigate.”
Meanwhile, friends of Lee told The Star that she was a smart, strong-willed and kind person.
One told the daily today that Lee had kept fit and loved to wear “glamorous dresses”, while another said she was generous in giving alms and aid for religious purposes.
The Star also reproduced a tribute to Lee, written by her 23-year-old son on his Facebook page.
“People always say life is short. Cherish and appreciate your loved ones when they are still around. I never thought such things would happen to me.
“In the blink of an eye, you’re gone. I’m still trying to accept that I will never be able to hear your voice anymore.
“If there is one thing I regret, it is not cherishing you when I had the chance. Now, everything seems dull. It feels as if a part of me is missing.
“Mum, I’m sorry for everything. Sorry for not being a filial son, sorry for not being able to repay you, sorry for not being able to tell you I love you for the last time. You will be missed.”
